The Different Causes of Hand and Wrist Pain

There are several causes of Hand and Wrist pain. Here are some of the more commone ones:

Tendonitis – Tendonitis, also spelled Tendinitis, is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon. Chronic strain, overuse or misuse of a tendon leading to a repetitive stress injury, or a serious acute injury can lead to a weakness, tear or swelling of the tendon tissue resulting in pain and stiffness near the tendon.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – A type of compression neuropathy (nerve damage) caused by compression and irritation of the median nerve in the wrist. The nerve is compressed within the carpal tunnel, a bony canal in the palm side of the wrist that provides passage for the median nerve to the hand. The irritation of the median nerve is specifically due to pressure from the transverse carpal ligament.

Wrist Sprain - A person with a wrist sprain has a stretched or torn a ligament in the wrist. Ligaments are strong fibrous bands that hold the bones in place during movement. The injury is usually related to an accident or fall. If you suffer an accident and have pain in your wrist that is limiting the mobility of your hand, and has become bruised and discolored, it’s almost certain that you’ve suffered a sprained wrist. The most common treatments for a sprained wrist are rest, ice, compression (tightly wrapped bandages) and elevation.

Wrist Arthritis – There are three major types of wrist arthritis that cause wrist pain while trying to perform everyday tasks. Post Traumatic Arthritis is the result of direct injury to the wrist, Wrist Instability is the result of abnormal carpal bone / cartilage movement, and Rheumatoid Arthritis is a system wide problem in which the body attacks its own cartilage resulting in severe inflammation of the joints. Although lifestyle changes can provide natural arthritis pain relief for certain degrees of arthritis, It may be tough to distinguish between the three on your own; it is therefore recommended you see a doctor for professional diagnosis.
