* Fomentation of the affected area will relieve pain and inflammation to a great extent.
* Throw out an overused mattress. Sleep on a comfortable, neither too hard nor too soft mattress.
* A hot bath followed by a cold shower will improve circulation and reduce pain. Alternately, apply a cold pack on the affected area after a hot bath.
* Avoid fatty foods and take plenty of salads that include raw vegetables like radish, carrot, lettuce, cucumber, cabbage, potato and tomato.

Exercise the lower back. Some useful exercises recommended by specialists are:

* The Side Stretch.
* The Back Arch.
* The Hamstring Stretch.

* Take proper rest. Get up from your seat, preferably every hour and stretch your muscles. * Waist cinching elastic back supports push the abdomen and make a natural cushion and protect nerves around the spine.
* If you have a desk job and work on the computer for long hours, make sure that your chair supports the natural curve of your spine and the keyboard is placed in a way that your elbows bend at right angles while typing.

Small things like sitting and standing in a good upright posture and staying clear from lifting heavy objects matter a lot. So do regular exercise and a healthy diet. Make these a part of your daily care and you may be able to keep sciatica at bay.

Self-Treatment for Sciatica Nerve Pain should be done Carefully

The general perception is that sciatica is caused by conditions that lead to a compression of the sciatic nerve. This can happen by certain alterations in spinal discs due to an injury or degeneration or the natural ageing process leading to a narrowing of the spinal cord.

The perception is correct by all means. However, there are conditions that can lead to sciatica even if they are not related to the spinal discs. Most of these conditions are caused by wrong postures and lack of exercise.

Self treatment is a dangerous thing in any ailment and should not be attempted. The only aspect of the condition that you should try managing on your own is the pain that sciatica causes. Sciatica is a symptom and not a disease and self treatment of sciatica is possible in instances where it is not caused due to compression of the spinal discs.

Sciatica is primarily caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve roots. The sciatic nerve has five roots that exit from the lower spine. The piriformis muscle contracts with spasms and the sciatic nerve is strangled beneath the muscle, causing a condition known medically as piriformis syndrome.

Sacroiliac joint, the joint between the sacrum (a wedge-shaped bone that has five fused vertebrae that form the posterior part of the pelvis.) and the ilium (the uppermost and the widest of the three bones that make the hipbone) develops distortions due to excessive sitting on a chair, sitting on a wallet or sleeping in a fetal position. The condition is aggravated due to lack of stretching exercises and those related to myofascial areas and results in vertebral and soft tissue conditions causing sciatica.

Regular exercise, correct postures and a healthy lifestyle are good preventive measures and can effective avoid a situation where you might need sciatic nerve treatment . However, once disc related sciatica has been diagnosed, self treatment is of little help and the condition requires expert guidance even for identifying the exercises that are effective and safe.

General or pseudo sciatica, however, can be effectively managed with stretching exercises that can be performed at home. Admittedly, in certain cases an initial guidance might be required in some cases. Distortions in the pelvis can be corrected by improving postural shortcomings and exercises.

There is no single cure for sciatica and causes of sciatica must be considered individually. Disc related sciatica requires consultation with experts of conventional or sciatica alternative remedies like chiropractic manipulations, yoga, acupuncture, herbal therapy and physical exercises.

A word of caution must be added here. Although some cases of sciatica can be treated at home, it is advisable that patients consult a professional and avoid self treatment to keep the condition from getting worse.

Stretching - Those of us who suffer from sciatica nerve pain can help relieve it by doing some stretching exercises every day. First, stand and then bend backward as far as you can. Then stand straight again and put your palms against your lower back while looking up to the ceiling. Hold this position for 10 seconds, and then relax.

Another effective exercise for sciatica pain is to lie on the floor, on your stomach, then lift your head and upper body up to arch your back. Hold the position for a few seconds, and then relax back down again.

The curl downs - If your back hurts or your sciatic nerve is giving you trouble, curl downs will save your life. The curl down exercise is basically the same as sit-ups, but with a twist. First, make sure your knees are bent, and then cross your arms across your chest. Then make the same up down movement that is in a sit up. Please, make sure that your back is completely straight when performing this exercise. As you are lying on your back, raise your upper body and then inhale with a deep breath. As long as you are able to do this, remain in this position. As you go back to your original position, exhale slowly and this will help to relieve your pain from your sciatica pain.

Bending - This is the best exercise that you can do to relieve back or leg pain. Lie on your stomach and raise your left leg up off of the floor. Bending your leg at the knee, pull your foot as close to your buttocks as you can. Hold this position for 10 seconds and release slowly. Repeat this activity with your right leg. Consistently doing these sciatic nerve exercises twice a day will bring the best results! Develop a habit of morning and evening exercise, and over the course of several weeks you should see a significant reduction in sciatic pain. As with any exercise, you should always "listen to your body" when you decide how and when to perform these simple moves.
